This week I'm messing around with skies. Also with horizons. I'm not sure where I'm going with it but it appears to be something I enjoy a lot, especially at the golden hour of sunset or sun rise. The image here, taken in a nearly empty parking lot, was just such a moment. I took this picture while waiting on my husband to finish with a doctor's appointment.
I'm curious what will be the content of my next several shoots. Normally this time of year I'm chasing weather. There hasn't been much storm action of late, however. Early fall is often a time in Central Ohio of storms, fog, weird clouds, flashes of sudden sunlight, then a dense overcast. I enjoy this change from the afternoons of long sunshine. I won't claim that the abundant clear weather hasn't allowed me many opportunities for flower photography.
The flowers I was able to capture in the spring and summer of 2022 have been something pretty striking. Though I believe I have seen many of these species before, I have on my new phone (an i-phone 13) an app that identifies by name and origin the specimen that I am looking at. I did this look-up on my handset upon seeing this cone flower in a neighbor's yard.
Sure enough -- Siri knew what it was. Not just a cone flower, but an echinacea purpurea. My devise lets me know, further, that the cone flower (or its echinacea angustifolia derivative) has been in use by traditional cultures for many eons. This material helps with insect bites, burns, wounds and in the topical treatment of irritation to the throat and for cough.
